VINTAGE CORNING PYROCERAM SQUARE OPEN CASSEROLE DISH A10 PYREX – RARE PIECE! This piece has no lid. Item is used in great condition. No chips or cracks anywhere. See photos for more. Rare Piece of Vintage Corning Ware with blue cornflower pattern. Condition: Good – In very good vintage condition. Made in USA Marked: A10 on the bottom of the disj Discovery In 1953 S. Donald Stookey of the Corning Research and Development Division discovered Pyroceram, a white glass-ceramic material capable of withstanding a thermal shock of up to 450 K (840 °F), by accident. He was working with photosensitive glass and placed a piece into a furnace planning on heating it to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. When he checked on his sample, the furnace was at 900 degrees and the glass had turned milky white. He reached into the furnace with tongs to discard the sample, and it slipped and hit the floor without shattering. Pyroceram was originally used in the ballistic missile program as a heat-resistant material for nose cones Glass-ceramics are polycrystalline materials produced through controlled crystallization of base glass, producing a fine uniform dispersion of crystals throughout the bulk material. Crystallization is accomplished by subjecting suitable glasses to a carefully regulated heat treatment schedule, resulting in the nucleation and growth of crystal phases. Pyroceram is the original glass-ceramic material developed and trademarked by Corning Glass in the 1950s. Pyroceram is an opaque, white, glass material, commonly used in kitchenware, glass stove tops, wood stove doors, etc. It has high heat tolerance and low thermal expansion. And a small chip on inner rim. Lid Marked 1-B, lid seems to fit both dishes, though it fits one slightly better. Please view photos for details and condition. The original run of Blue Cornflower Corning Ware was made of Pyroceram, NASA graded synthetic glass-ceramic. Will include two vintage petite pans free! Along with the two above mentioned dishes. In the early 2000s, the company replaced Pyroceram with stoneware. Stoneware, while it has its own merits, isn’t nearly as durable or multifaceted as Pyroceram. Put a stoneware dish under a broiler or in a freezer, and you will have a big mess. CorningWare originated in 1958 in Corning, N. The glass cookware was marketed to homemakers as “oven-to-table service” which could also be used directly on the stovetop. The first pattern was cornflower blue – petite blue posies on a solid white background – which was produced for 30 years. Vintage Corningware pans, can. Reheat frozen leftovers in the oven (or microwave) without thawing first. Saute onions, mushrooms or whatever on the stove top on medium-high – or high – heat. Bake macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes and more in the oven. Create killer cheese sauces when a “heavy” pan is called for. Safely heat foods in the microwave. Soak my casseroles in water with dish liquid and clean off any stuck-on food easily. Store food in the freezer. Because all my dishes have tight-fitting glass lids.
